Hantavirus FAQ

Clear answers from WHO, CDC and ECDC sources. See also symptoms, Andes virus reference.

What is the cruise ship hantavirus outbreak?

The MV Hondius reported 7 cases of severe respiratory illness — 2 lab-confirmed hantavirus and 5 suspected — including 3 deaths. 147 passengers and crew from 23 countries are on board. The WHO is investigating possible human-to-human transmission.

Can hantavirus spread between people?

Most hantaviruses do NOT spread person-to-person. The exception is the Andes virus — limited human-to-human transmission has been documented. The WHO is investigating whether this occurred on the MV Hondius.

What are the first symptoms?

Early symptoms (1–5 weeks after exposure): high fever (38–40°C), severe muscle aches, fatigue, headache, chills. Respiratory symptoms appear later and progress rapidly — call 112/911 immediately.

What is the death rate?

HPS has a global CFR of ~35%. HFRS (Europe/Asia) has a lower CFR of 1–15% depending on strain.

Is there a vaccine?

No globally approved vaccine. Treatment is supportive: ICU, oxygen, ventilation, ECMO. An mRNA vaccine candidate is in Phase II trials (2026).

How can I prevent infection?

Avoid rodent contact. Seal gaps ≥6mm. Never sweep rodent droppings (wet with bleach first). Wear N95 in infested areas. Air out enclosed spaces 30+ min before entering.
